The Basics of Medicare

  • What is Original Medicare health insurance benefits? Original Medicare is provided by the Federal Government and consists of Part A and Part B. Medicare Part A helps pay for hospital stays and inpatient care while Medicare Part B helps pay for doctor visits and outpatient care.
  • When you join Medicare, you may enroll in Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, or both. The decision about which parts of Medicare to enroll in is usually based on whether or not you have other individual health insurance in addition to Medicare, such as an employer plan.
  • Even if you enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B, Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything. This is why it’s a good idea to learn more about other Medicare Plans including dental insurance plans and vision insurance.
  • If you have Part A and Part B, you may choose to add additional coverage, such as a Medicare Supplement and a prescription drug plan (Part D) to your Original Medicare. Or, you may choose a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C)1

Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)

Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private companies and combine Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance) in one plan. Medicare Advantage Plans usually include prescription drug coverage and may offer additional benefits not provided by Original Medicare, such as dental, vision, and hearing coverage.

Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are offered by private life insurance companies and help pay some of the out-of-pocket costs that come with Original Medicare.

Medicare Prescription Drug Insurance (Part D)

Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage. It helps pay for the medications your doctor prescribes. Original Medicare does not cover prescription drugs. You can obtain prescription drug coverage by enrolling in a Part D plan, or by enrolling in a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes Part D.

Marketplace Insurance

  • The Health Insurance Marketplace is a resource where individuals, families, and small businesses can compare health insurance plans for coverage and affordability.

Open Enrollment for 2021 is over, but you may still be able to enroll in a Marketplace health insurance plan for 2021 if you qualify for a special enrollment period.

  • You’re eligible if you have certain life events, like getting married, having a baby, or losing other health coverage.
  • You can apply and enroll in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) any time of the year.

 

Short-Term Health Insurance

Short-term health plans offer budget-friendly coverage to get you through transitions in your life. In some circumstances, you can get coverage as soon as the day after you apply. Short-term plans offer a range of deductibles to help you find a plan that fits your budget.

 

If you missed the deadline for open enrollment or can’t afford the premiums and deductibles that come with traditional insurance, then short-term coverage may be a good option for you.

Rachel Lee – Owner and Founder

Welcome. My name is Rachel Lee and I am the Owner and Founder of Midwest Insurance Professionals. My career in the insurance industry began in 2007 at American Republic Insurance Company and eventually lead to a successful career as an independent agent. In my previous leadership role with UnitedHealthcare, I served as a mentor and resource for agents who worked within the Medicare market. In 2017, I founded Midwest Insurance Professionals with a mission to build a team of professional agents who provide competitive products and great service.

I am a lifelong resident of Iowa and currently reside in Des Moines with my son Owen and our French bulldog Theo. I enjoy running, reading, cooking, traveling, and spending time outdoors. I have always loved flowers and gardening is my newest passion and hobby. When I travel, I love to be near the ocean and love taking my son to Disney. I love spending time with my family and significant other, Mike, who shares my love of travel and is always willing to help me tackle my never-ending list of home improvement projects. He just recently built my son an amazing treehouse!
